Making dissonant noise sound pretty is Yo La Tengo's calling card. And the New Jersey indie trio is in top form on its first album this decade "Fade." Clashing guitar chords and orchestral crescendos meld softly in "Before We Run." The opener, "Ohm," is filled with playful, yet insightful lyrics that encourage the listener to join in. The two six-minutes-plus tracks make nice bookends on an album of shorter songs with varied tempos and temperaments. The result is an album you can throw on during a snowy night and lose yourself in.
