Aug 2, 2007 — Burgers and tuna and veal, oh my.

The Country Corner Family Restaurant in Jackson Township offers a wide variety of choices. It was the perfect place for me to break out of my turkey-and-chicken-sandwich cycle.

I searched the menu high and low. My eyes glazed over as I read ham with a pineapple ring served with one vegetable and choice of salad or soup ($8.95) and fettuccini Alfredo with soup or salad ($9.95). Then, I caught a glimpse of the shrimp basket ($7.95) and the filet of flounder ($9.25) that each came with a vegetable and choice of soup or salad. My mind danced with visions of tasty home-cooked food.

Despite all the delicious offerings, I kept coming back to the barbecue chicken sub served with french fries or soup for $4.95. I haven't figured out my addiction yet, but I am working on it. It would have been great to try the oyster

pie or the patty melt on rye because these are dishes I don't make at home. Alas, under pressure, I went with an old standby, a barbecue chicken sub, and I chose a cup of seafood combination soup. I guess I am afraid to step out of my culinary box.

Anyway, it proved to be a fine choice. The soup was thick and creamy with a slight kick of spice. It was filled with all sorts of seafood and something I am pretty sure was chicken. The sub was everything I require in a lunch. The generous chunks of chicken were slathered in barbecue sauce and squeezed between a toasted roll topped with lettuce, tomato and onion. A pickle and chips filled the plate.

I barely touched the chips because the rest of the meal was so filling.

The atmosphere at Country Corner is, well, country. The wood-panel walls are stenciled with snaking vines. It's a humongous restaurant, but all the decorations and wall hangings make it feel like home.

When you enter through the back door, there is a gift shop will all kinds of trinkets and gadgets. Owner John Galanopoulos said the restaurant serves daily chef specials, ranging from deli sandwiches to baked haddock to meatloaf.

The customers' favorites include roast chicken, lasagna, hot turkey and hot beef.

Check out the colossal menu for yourself. You're sure to zone in on your favorite food.
