Dec 20, 2007 — Four customers stood patiently near the checkout counter, waiting for their lunch.

One man read the newspaper while a Lower Windsor Township police officer made small talk with the cashier.

By getting out of my normal routine of taking Route 30, I stumbled upon Cabin Creek Deli and More on East Prospect Road.

Township zoning doesn't allow for a dining area in the small grocery and deli, but it hasn't stopped the locals from frequenting the hometown hangout for breakfast sandwiches and subs. Men on their way to work stop for coffee and at $1.17 for a large, it is the cheapest I've seen in a while.

In addition to two daily specials, which sometimes includes platters, owner Kendra Dosch serves homemade soups, sandwiches and subs.

"Breakfast and lunch are our biggest thing," she said. "We make pancakes and that kind of

stuff."

It's always a gamble when I order chicken salad subs. Like creamy verses crunchy peanut butter, people are very adamant about chunky or finely chopped. I rally for the chunky.

After seeing the police officer walk out with a 12-inch cheesesteak, I opted for the smaller 8-inch when I ordered my chicken salad sub ($4.19) and a cup of chicken corn soup ($1.69). While I waited, I picked a 20-ounce Turkey Hill Diet Iced Tea from the cooler ($1.25).

There are coolers of drinks and shelves of groceries surrounding the deli counter. I waited only about five to 10 minutes for the food. My total came to $7.48, and I left with my hands full. I don't recommend eating and driving, but as I drove back to York I couldn't help but eat the sub. The chunks of chicken and hard-boiled egg were lathered in a bath of mayonnaise so thick it tasted sinful. The salad was nestled in an ordinary sub roll and topped with sweet peppers, lettuce, tomato and onion. I was so full after that, I had to save the soup for later.

Dosch said she makes all of her own soups and at least twice a week offers a homemade platter, such as hog maw, chicken pot pie, meatloaf and macaroni and cheese. And a lot of the customers are hooked on the barbecue bacon cheeseburger ($3.75).

"People like the burgers because they are thicker, not skinny like a fast-food burger," Dosch said.

When I finally did get around to eating the soup, it was almost identical to my mom's homemade. There were cubes of potatoes, hard-boiled eggs and chicken along with a sprinkling of corn.

If you live close by, Cabin Creek Deli and More is the perfect place to pick up dinner on a busy weeknight. If you don't, take a scenic drive. Better yet, I recommend going in the summer when you can sit at one of the outdoor picnic tables.
