Director Timothy Storey said he wants the audience to feel like they're a part of "Charlotte's Web."
Sure, the set and acting might accomplish that, but a pie-eating contest during intermission and an animal learning center in a fair-like atmosphere at York Little Theatre will surely do the trick.
Storey said those additions to the production of the classic children's book create an interactive experience for guests.
Before shows, people can sign up to participate in the pie-eating contest. A raffle might be drawn, depending on how many people sign up.
From 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, York County 4-H club members from the area will set up goats, chickens, geese, rabbits and guinea pigs outside of the theater. Snow cones and popcorn will be available.
Alma Rooney, who coordinated the animal learning center with 4-H, said the goal was to have animals that were in the show, so children can see firsthand what they look like.
"Kids don't get exposed to animals like they used to," she said. "I didn't get any rats, though."
Storey said he's excited to bring his vision of the script to life.
He said the story - which touches on themes of friendship and loyalty - is one everyone should know.
"It's a fun story to tell," Storey said. "But it's a sad story."
He said his favorite character is Templeton the rat because he's so over-the-top.
"It's so fun to bring that out," Storey said.
The set features the interior of a barn with a new element that should put viewers in farm state of mind. The crew created a 12-foot, climbable web made of rope and wood, which allows Charlotte to separate herself from the rest of the characters.
Storey said he wants the audience, no matter what their age, to feel excitement during the show.
"I hope it'll be an inspiration for people to reconnect with their imagination."
