York County theater students and fans will come together for Encore this spring.

An encore -- a repeat performance, usually by audience demand -- was the inspiration for the new name of the area's high school theater awards, formerly called The Rosies.

The end of a high school musical's run can be a letdown for students, Encore director Lyn Bergdoll said. The theater showcase and awards ceremony, which comes right after many productions wrap, lets casts perform together again while the material is still fresh.

"That's why I think kids have always loved the event," Bergdoll said.

The April 21 date is earlier than previous Rosies ceremonies. Bergdoll said that eliminates conflicts with other activities, including proms and spring concerts. The 2:30 p.m. show time -- also earlier -- was chosen since students have school the next day.

Encore will be the first area theater awards held at Central York High School in Springettsbury Township. In the fall, organizers announced that the event -- held since its 2005 inception at York's Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center -- was moving.

But aside from the name, date and place, little else about the event's format is changing.

Casts from several York County high schools will perform selections from their spring musicals. About 500 students are expected to participate. Awards will then be presented in categories including Best Production Number, Best Overall Performance and Most Creative or Original Performance.

Bergdoll said every musical director will present an award to a student of his or her choice.

"It's a very special time of sharing," she said. "It's really inspirational."

Tickets will be available online and by phone. And, as in previous years, Bergdoll said she anticipates a sell out.
