Detroit rocker Bob Seger was celebrated throughout the 1970s and 1980s for his gritty lyrics about the everyday life of the common man.

Songs like "Against the Wind," "Feel Like a Number," and "Turn the Page" made Seger a household name among working-class music fans.

So naturally, the Seger sound is best enjoyed with ... a glass of fine wine?

Tom Day, owner of Hummingbird Ridge Winery in Newberry Township, said he didn't really put that much thought into it when he booked Against the Wind to do a Seger tribute show.

A longtime garage musician who plays the guitar and bass, Day said he came up with the idea for a wine-tasting event with Seger music while hanging out with his buddies.

"We're just trying to create a fun environment for people to enjoy the evening," he said. "There's not going to be loud music. There'll just be music and you can sit there and enjoy the evening."

The event is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hummingbird's winery at 735 Kise Mill Road, Newberry Township.

Day started Hummingbird about three years ago and said it hasn't gone exactly as he envisioned.

"I really thought it was just going to be a glamorous thing, but it's a lot of work," he said. "You really have to love the job and love doing it to be successful at it."

Hummingbird recently opened a second tasting room and wine store at Newberry Commons Mall, just off Exit 33 of Interstate 83.

"We like to say wine is just flying off the shelves," Day joked.

Hummingbird is on a never-ending quest for perfectly balanced wines, he added. The winery will be promoting two new wines that will debut in the coming months: cherry chocolate wine, out for Valentine's Day, and Irish mint wine, due in time for St. Patrick's Day.

"A good wine is a wine that somebody else likes," Day said. "When I have people tasting and they're not saying the right words. ... I just look at them and say, 'Do you like it or don't you like it?'

"What makes a good wine is you enjoying that wine."

Anyone attending the wine tasting will be able to bring food to eat, Day said. There are several restaurants located nearby.

The event is free with free parking. Seating is limited inside the winery, so Day advises attendees to "bring your bag chairs."
