Wow your sweetie with your newly found dance skills at OrangeMite Studios Valentine's Dance at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Dover.
Instructors Bill and Lynette Baker, of Sir Dance-A-Lot Studio in Spring Grove, will provide some basic instruction of waltz and swing dance to live music played by Dover Community Orchestra and OrangeMite Jazz.
"It's like rehearsal and performance for yourself all in one night," executive director Billy Wolfgang said.
Wolfgang said OMS first held the event last year, and participants wanted a reprise. He said the idea came from a board member who wanted to provide a fun outlet in the Dover community for Valentine's Day. The formal event also includes dessert.
"It's not like prom or anything," Wolfgang joked. "People get to dress up and go out with their honey."
And, he said, it's a great way to embrace the arts on the cheap.
Wolfgang said the Bakers have been gracious to donate instruction to the organization since it began in 2008. The Bakers first taught actors to tango for the production of "In the Globe."
"They're really great people," he said.
Bill Baker said he and his wife have enjoyed working with OMS because of Wolfgang's talent as a musician and because their involvement has fostered the dance talent of OMS.
"Some of the actors have been young enough that this stuff really sinks in," he said. "They've become incredible dancers."
Baker said the Valentine's dance is a perfect way to start learning about formal dance. Last year, he said, many of the participants were eager to learn.
For anyone who's apprehensive about trying it out, Baker said, dancing in a group helps.
"People are always concerned that they're going to be awkward, when it comes to anything that's regimented," he said. "When they're in a group, it's very easy for them to relax."
