Over a century ago, the York Jewish Community Center was formed with one goal in mind - to strengthen and preserve Jewish culture in the local community.
More than 100 years and five location changes later, the Jewish Community Center is still working hard to fulfill its mission. This week, it will be in the form of bringing a group of acrobats directly from Israel over to its center for a fun-filled cultural performance.
The York Jewish Community Center will host a free acrobatics show featuring the Inbal Mayo's Acrobatics Team Saturday.
The acrobatics team features gymnasts ages 8 to 18 years old and represent some of the most cutting edge choreography from Israel.
"This event is a great relationship building event to connect Israel and our community, and we're really excited to welcome the talented gymnasts to the York Jewish Community Center," said Bill Walter, York Jewish Community Center program director. "It's exciting for us to be bringing something new culturally to a community of our size, and offer some free local cultural entertainment."
The free acrobatics show will begin at 7 p.m. at the York Jewish Community Center, and will incorporate traditional Israeli music and symbols along with some modern touches.
Bill Walter said he brought the acrobatics show to the York Jewish Community Center five years ago, and got the idea to resurrect the show again this year when planning out the center's program offerings.
Walter formed a relationship
"The level of commitment, professionalism, and breathtaking choreography this particular group of Israeli acrobats demonstrates is absolutely phenomenal," Walter said. "I'm really excited for the public to get a chance to see what they have to offer."
In addition to the free performance on Saturday, there will be free acrobatics workshops for children in kindergarten to grade six on Friday. Children will have the opportunity to learn things such as pyramid structure and basic gymnastics, along with partaking in some fun gymnastics-related games.
Workshops are available for children in kindergarten to second grade at 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., and for children in grades three to six at 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. at the York Jewish Community Center.
The center has been sponsoring programs like this since its founding 102 years ago. In addition to its Israel programming, The center also provides wellness and fitness programs, children's education, youth camps, Jewish culture and holiday programs, holocaust and diversity education, and contemporary adult programming.
"It's important for us to have a diversity of programs that will culturally enrich the community and open the doors for people to see what we're about," Walter said. "We just encourage everyone to come out for a night of free, fun family entertainment.
