Every Friday night, Alexis Newell leaves her South Miami, Fla., home for Miami Beach, where she plops down on cushioned outdoor seats and orders a beer and a hookah, a long, ornate water pipe. Usually joined by friends, her group lounges for hours, passing the fruity smoke-exuding pipe around, munching on falafel between puffs.

This multitasking musician cooks gumbo on stage while singing. Bill "Sauce Boss" Wharton, the "inventor of gastronomical boogie-woogie," sings swampy Florida blues and plays guitar while making dinner for the audience. He'll do it in chef dress whites Saturday night during a two-and-a-half-hour show at The Hop in Manchester Township.   more
