Expect more than just desserts from the newly opened Roosevelt Diner on Roosevelt Avenue, at the former home of Beck's Ice Cream.
Sure, signs of Beck's are still plentiful, from lettering on the building outside to ice cream cases inside.
But the new diner's owners are in the process of making the building their own.
A board sitting on the sidewalk outside lists daily specials; inside, tables are covered with colorful tablecloths.
Owner Michelle Long opened the restaurant just two days after closing Our Cafe and Bakery on Loucks Road in West Manchester Township, earlier this month. Long said she's been in the restaurant business in the area since 2009.
While she wanted to turn her focus to a sit-down eatery, she will continue to serve some of the family's beloved baked goods, including their cheese pound cake and cookies. They will still take orders for custom cakes, too. (Looking for a last-minute New Year's Eve dessert? Give 'em a call.)
Prices are right for the food -- a bagel with cream cheese is $1.50; the most expensive items on the menu are Build Your Own Breakfast or Omelet for $7.85.
Long said daily specials will be served, too, like chicken piccata, baked haddock and a turkey meal with stuffing.
Sandwiches, salads, paninis and specialty coffee drinks similar to those at Our Cafe and Bakery appear on Roosevelt Diner's menu, too. A Southwestern Chicken Salad runs $7; a Polock Johnny's Sausage sandwich is $4; a Meatloaf panini costs $7.75.
Featured on the drink menu are milkshakes, caramel macchiatos, mochas, chai tea lattes, fruit smoothies and frozen chocolates.
Coffee comes fresh roasted from Gerhart Coffee Co. in Lancaster.
When I visited on a recent Saturday for lunch, I opted for a Belgian waffle. Breakfast is served all day (to the delight of late-risers).
The waffle comes with a choice of toppings (bananas and whipped cream, please) for $3.50.
I also ordered an iced tea ($1.90) with a shot of peach syrup (an extra 50 cents).
My entire lunch was under $6, and I was OK with that.
