CVSM invites IceFest to "Warm up with Music"

CHAMBERSBURG - All are invited to "Warm Up with Music" during Chambersburg's  IceFest on Saturday, Jan. 30, inside the Chambersburg Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, for free live music, shows and activities sponsored by the Cumberland Valley School of Music. Performances and sample music lessons are planned from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m.

The church's main entry is on the square. Volunteers will be on duty to assist guests at the door. Street parking is available.

Performances will include an 11 a.m. presentation of "The Musical World of Walt Disney" given by CVSM voices ages 6-17. Under the direction of Heather Kline and Hayley Bowders, CVSM instructors, the group of 17 students will sing some of the most beloved Disney songs, including "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "Bippity-Boppity-Boo," "The Colors of the Wind," "Be Our Guest," and others.

Also at the church, the CVSM Community Symphonic Band will perform at 3 p.m. under the baton of Timothy Gotwald, an instructor at the school. He will lead the group of musicians, ranging from middle school through senior citizens, through a variety of selections. Gotwald gathered the group together for weekly rehearsals beginning on Dec. 10.

Gotwald selected some music for the concert with a seasonal theme, including "The Skaters" by Emile Waldteufel. Brian Balmages' "Winter Dances," and symphonic highlights from "Frozen," arranged by Stephen Bulla. The band will take a break from the winter theme with "Manhattan Beach" by John Philip Sousa and other selections.

Gotwald said that the group is designed to give proficient area musicians an opportunity to play concert band repertoire twice yearly. The group will re-form in May for another round of rehearsals and a concert performance.

Sample music lessons and instrument demonstrations will also be offered, back by popular demand from last year's CVSM activities. All ages are welcome to participate.

An early childhood demonstration music class will run from 10 to 10:30 a.m.; sample piano lessons will be offered from 10 until 11 a.m.; and those leaning toward stringed instruments might enjoy sample guitar and/or ukulele lessons, to be given from noon through 12:30 p.m.

Preschoolers ages 3-5 can begin the afternoon sampling sessions by joining in a demonstration music class from 12:30 until 1 p.m. New Horizons Band members will be available to offer an instrument demonstration, known as an "instrument petting zoo," from 1 until 2 p.m. Sample violin lessons will run from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Sample voice lessons will begin at 2:30 and conclude at 3 p.m., just as the symphonic band concert starts.

All scheduled sample lesson times are tentative.
