Destination Gettysburg launches travel app

So you're planning a trip to Gettysburg...where do you start?

The historic town contains all the major tourist must-haves: dining, shopping, lodging and entertainment. But with so many choices, it would be helpful to know more about the area's attractions before hitting the road.

Enter My Gettysburg, a free app recently launched by Destination Gettysburg, a marketing organization that promotes the town and Adams County. The app, available in both the Apple and Google Play stores, aggregates the region's many offerings for visitors and locals.

"Putting information in front of travelers is key to any destination," Norris Flowers, president of Destination Gettysburg, said in a news release. "This app puts relevant, timely and targeted information at their fingertips as they look for new ways to experience Gettysburg and Adams County."

The app has already been downloaded 500 times, according to the news release. It provides links to Destination Gettysburg's social media pages, blogs itineraries, travel videos, an events calendar, and users can elect to receive push notifications about discounts, news and other Gettysburg information.

Destination Gettysburg's members are given free listings of their businesses on the app, similar to how the organization's website and other marketing materials work.

To explore the app, users may select from several categories: Places to Eat, Places to Stay, Things to Do and Itineraries. Within each category is a subcategory with more specific information.

For instance, under Places to Eat, you can also find outdoor dining spots, historic and period fare restaurants and casual dining . The Itineraries category includes a Civilians and Spirits section with information about ghost tours and history-focused activities.

When they're in town, visitors can mark their favorite spots on the app to bookmark them for future visits.

The intended purpose of the app is to engage visitors when they're in Gettysburg and when they're at home, the news release states.

"Our goal from the beginning was to create a travel app that wouldn't simply be downloaded when a visitor arrived in the Gettysburg area and immediately deleted when they left town," Flowers said in the news release. "That's why we developed the app in a way that motivated subscribers to connect with us about events, deals and discounts as well as other news about what's happening in the area to encourage these visitors to return."

To download the app, search for My Gettysburg in the Apple or Google Play stores, or visit Destination Gettysburg's website.
