Broadway stars to perform at Gettysburg College

Two bright stars of Broadway will shine at the Gettysburg College Union Ballroom on March 5.

Marie Danvers, who played Christine Daae in "The Phantom of the Opera," and her husband Rob Gallagher, known for his performance as Javert in "Les Miserables," will share their talents at Gettysburg Community Theatre's 8th annual gala, "Broadway in Gettysburg" 6:30 p.m. March 5. The performing arts power couple will sing selections from the timeless classics they have starred in, including "West Side Story," "Brigadoon" and "Man of LaMancha."

The benefit will raise funds for the theater, providing support for its educational and outreach programming like youth summer day camp, according to a news release from the organization.

Chad Alan-Carr, founding executive/artistic director of the theater, worked with both Danvers and Daae in summer stock theater when he was 16 years old.

"It is so exciting for me to share my love of community theater every day with my students and community here who are all so incredibly supportive," he said in the news release. "But for me to see these dear old friends that I was starstruck by so many years ago - and still admire to this day - now performing with them again along with my students and other performers from (Gettysburg Community Theatre) to help raise much needed funds for this theater I love so much is just so heartwarming."

In addition to her role in "The Phantom of the Opera," Danvers has performed in "A Chorus Line, Company," "Brigadoon," the national and international tour of "The Fantasticks" with Robert Goulet and the soap opera "As the World Turns." She sang with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, the Broadway by the Year Series in New York and the Long Island Philharmonic.

She recently played Sister Robert in "Nunsense" at the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport. Today she is a professor of theater at Five Towns College.

Gallagher acted in the Tony Award-winning revival of "South Pacific," as well as off-Broadway shows like "Forbidden Broadway" and "Reefer Madness." His regional credits include performances in "The Music Man," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Oklahoma," "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "A Wonderful Life," "The Sound of Music" and "Oliver." He has performed with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, the Long Island Philharmonic and the Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. He appeared on television in "One Life to Live" and "All My Children."

Gettysburg theater buffs will recognize Gallagher from his performance at the Majestic Theater's "100 Years of Broadway" event in November, according to the news release.

Other guests set to perform at "Broadway in Gettysburg" are community theater alumni Drew Becker and Marilyn Lopes.

The evening includes an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, desserts and live and silent auctions. Artwork, jewelry, autographed Broadway memorabilia, a Las Vegas weekend condo and gift certificates are among the items up for bidding.

Tickets are $75 per person, and reservations for tables of eight are available. For details visit GettysburgCommunityTheatre.org or call 717-334-2692.
