Luhrs adds Sedaka, handbells, symphony

SHIPPENSBURG - New performances have been added to the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center's 2015-2016 season, and tickets are on sale now for the additional shows.

New events include the classic pop sounds of Neil Sedaka at 8 p.m.on Saturday, April 23.; the acclaimed concert handbell choir, The Raleigh Ringers (presented by the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 25; and the annual classical music concerts of the Shippensburg Symphony Festival Series at 7:30 p.m.on Thursdays, July 14, 21 and 28.

Sedaka

Neil Sedaka is known as an accomplished singer, songwriter, composer, pianist and author. In his impressive 60-year career he was one of the first teen pop sensations of the '50s, a relevant songwriter for himself and other artists in the '60s and a superstar in the '70s, while remaining a constant force in writing and performing. He has written, performed and produced countless songs that continue to inspire artists and audiences around the world.

Raleigh Ringers

The Raleigh Ringers will be making their debut at the Luhrs Center, courtesy of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church in Shippensburg. The Raleigh Ringers are an internationally acclaimed concert handbell choir based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since their founding in 1990, The Raleigh Ringers have been dazzling audiences with unique interpretations of sacred, secular and popular music, including famous rock’n’roll tunes arranged just for handbells. Festival series

The Luhrs Center announces the return of conductor Robert Trevino to conduct all three performances of this season’s Shippensburg Symphony Festival Series. Each performance within the series includes The Shippensburg Festival Symphony, and Concert III includes both the Symphony and The Shippensburg Festival Chorus.

The theme for this season’s series is “Grand Expressions.” Soloists include:

- Concert I (July 14, 7:30 p.m.) – oboist, Dwight Parry

- Concert II (July 21, 7:30 p.m.) – violinist, Caroline Goulding; cellist, Joshua Roman; and pianist, Julia Siciliano

- Concert III (July 28, 2016, 7:30 p.m.) features Verdi’s famous opera, “La Traviata,” with an all-star cast of renowned guest soloists.

Dr. Blaine Shover, professor of music at Shippensburg University, is artistic director for the series. Tickets for the Series are priced at $100, $70, and $55. Individual concert tickets are $35, $25 & $20. Additional information, including the series repertoire, is available at Luhrscenter.com.
