Look inside hand-dug tunnel under old Weinbrom building

The tunnel looks hand dug, connecting two basements beneath the former Weinbrom Jewelers building at 58 W. Market St. in York. The earthen, timber pathway extends a half city block along the sidewalk in the first block of South Beaver Street, under the building from West Market Street to West Mason Avenue.  The tunnel is about 5 foot tall.

Renovations at the former Weinbrom Jewelers building at 58 W. Market St. are part of the $11.7 million redevelopment plan Royal Square Development and Construction has for Market Street. The building also once housed the Zodiac Club that featured city streetscape murals among others and closed around 2000. The murals were created for an earlier club called Big City, another club Fenix was also at the site.

Many of the historical, architectural features will be retained during renovation that began with stabilization, and last week, with Refindings salvaging what won't be used in the renovation.

After work is done, the building will have a 2,200-square-foot space for a restaurant or cafe on the West Market Street side of the building, and multiple spaces for smaller retail tenants along the Beaver Street side. It will also have apartments on the upper floors, including a loft style apartment in the former club space.
