Destination ARTS! launches Summer in the Square

WAYNESBORO - Destination ARTS! will be hosting a summer filled with activities, events and music for the family starting on Friday, May 27, with musical guests performing beside BB&T bank and Frank’s Pizza every Friday from 5:30-8 p.m. as weather permits.

Island Fusion will be the first group to kick off the summer performance schedule with music that combines the style of Jimmy Buffet with traditional island tunes. Magic acts, face painting, artists’ demonstrations and performances will round out each weekend's events throughout the summer. Outdoor activities will end on Sept. 4.

In Center Square from 3-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, Drew Adams, the popular singer/guitarist of the Drew Adams Project and On Tap, returns to Destination ARTS! for a special performance.

The rain site for both outdoor shows is inside Gallery 50, 50 W. Main St..

“Last year, we had the idea to move activities out on the square to attract more attention to Destination ARTS! and the galleries,” said Amy Stine, executive director of the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro, in a press release announcing the summer program. “Our goal is to continue to expose people to the fantastic artisans, musicians, and local businesses that Waynesboro has to offer right on the square where they can’t miss it.”

Thanks to the increased success of Wine Down Fridays, Gallery 50 will continue to host a musical guest on Friday evenings inside the gallery. All Destination ARTS! galleries will still provide demonstrations and classes at their individual locations throughout the year.

On Friday, May 27, inside Gallery 50, 50 W. Main St., Waylon K. Smith, one-half of the popular Greencastle-based band, the Positronic Cats, will be rocking the house with an intriguing mix of striking original songs and folk-rock classics. Wine and light refreshments will be available.

Also on Saturday, May 28, Rod Meyer and Karri Benedict will be working in clay and demonstrating how they create stoneware and decorative Raku pottery from 1-3 p.m. at 42 West ARTS Co-Op & Gallery, 42 West Main Street, Waynesboro. For more information, visit the co-op website at www.42westarts.com or call 717-762-8394.

Rod Meyer and Karri Benedict, who are husband and wife, have been making pottery together for more than 37 years. Their work shows respect for fine craftsmanship and their sense of design is strongly influenced by function. They produce functional pieces for the home that is lead-free and dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe. They are both juried members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and own and operate Willow Creek Pottery.

Looking ahead, painters of all ability levels are invited to join Gallery 50 Curator and local artist Marjorie Tressler for a painting class every Thursday morning  from 9-11:30 a.m. in Gallery 50, 50 West Main Street, Waynesboro, beginning Thursday, June 2. The class will cover both oil and acrylic painting techniques. Students will receive individual attention in a relaxed environment from an award-winning local artist and will be encouraged to work on their preferred subject matter. The cost is $65 for six classes and students must provide their own painting materials. To register or to learn more, contact Marjorie Tressler at 717-762-6791.

Starting Monday, June 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in  Gallery 50, all artists and artisans are invited to join a new monthly discussion group aimed to connect one another. The group will provide a fun and convenient social opportunity for anyone wanting to share ideas, art techniques, upcoming regional show dates, receive and provide mentoring, and inspire one another. Participants are encouraged to bring their latest art projects for those in attendance to view and enjoy. There are no fees or club/membership requirements. To express interest or to learn more contact Marjorie Tressler at 717-762-6791 or atmarjorietressler@comcast.net.
