The Capitol Theatre Center goes to the beach


CHAMBERSBURG - This year's version of the popular August Pop A Cork fundraiser for the historic nonprofit Capitol Theatre adopts a beach party theme, with island-inspired entertainment and appropriately tropical refreshments.

The party is 1-7 p.m.,  August 20, ran or shine, in the Capitol Back Lot, 159 S. Main St. Chambersburg, PA.

Admission is $10 which includes the music and a souvenir "Pop A Cork for the Capitol" glass, while supplies last.

Live island music

Escape to the islands with the live music of the Panama Rex Band from Howard County, Maryland, at 1 p.m., billed as "the ultimate Jimmy Buffet tribute" mixed with originals.

Chill with the authentic island vibe of the Philly Reggae Band from Philadelphia at 4 p.m.

Tiki bar

Cool off with an adult beverage from the tiki bar in the back lot of the Capitol Theatre Center.

Sunny season drink selections will include a variety of wines, Bahama Mamas, Bay Breezes, spiced rum and Cokes, frozen Margaritas and pina coladas, adult sno cones and popular beers.

Drink tickets benefit the Capitol Theatre. There will be no wineries or tastings at this year's event.

Myrtle Beach condo and party basket raffle

Take a chance to win a stay in a private, two-bedroom condo two blocks from the ocean in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Tickets are $5 each or 6 tickets for $25.

Island-themed food

Party guests will enjoy a bounty of beachy menu entrees and sides, including crab cake sandwiches, jerk chicken wings, Hawaiian pulled pork sandwiches, burger sliders, mojito lime ribs, vegetarian black bean burgers, grilled corn on the cob, potato salad, pineapple slaw, island vegetable medley, mango sweet tea and more from Hempen Hill BBQ of Hagerstown, Maryland, and EJ’s Grill of Chambersburg. The Capitol Theatre concession stand will also be open with soda, bottled water, popcorn and candy.

Interactive fun

Take aim and soak Chambersburg Mayor Darren Brown at the dunk tank from 1-1:30 p.m.,; Noel Purdy, president of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce Chambersburg from 1:30-2 p.m.; and other potential victims. Enjoy a casual game of cornhole or have your photo taken with a human-sized beach ball. Jennings Chevrolet Buick GMC will bring a 2016 Yukon Denali for partygoers to check out.

The details

Guests should be prepared to show ID to consume alcohol. No pets, please; service animals only. No outside food, drinks or coolers are allowed. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs. There's an extra charge for food, drinks, dunk tank and raffle tickets.
