Conococheague Institute gets Tall, Blond and Thirsty - again

MERCERSBURG - Everything was in place for a great show of powerhouse country blues and rock from the Tall, Blond & Thirsty Band on the pastoral grounds of The Conococheague Institute August 13, when the sky turned threatening. After the band’s third song, lightning was striking a little too close for comfort and everyone headed for cover. A blown transformer in Welsh Run ensured that the concert would not continue, at least for that night.

Fortunately for all area music lovers, there was a rain date set for Saturday, August 20.

Proceeds of the concert will support the rebuilding of the historic Negley Log House which was destroyed by fire in February 2016. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on the CI grounds at 12995 Bain Road, Mercersburg. A $10 donation is requested for everyone over 12.

When singer/songwriter Jill Fulton heard about the loss of the unique historic house, she reached out to CI with a plan to raise money for its rebuilding. “We can practically see the Institute from our house,” she said. “It’s such a beautiful and important place that I was immediately drawn to do something to help.”

General manager Clifford Smith couldn’t accept the offer fast enough. “When the Negley burned down, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of concern from the community. Jill’s generous offer has been the icing on the cake,” he said. Even though the fire was ruled accidental and the house was insured, it will take much more funding to build a faithful replica. The Negley House was built in the early 1800s and was constantly inhabited until the mid-1950s. The house was restored to its early appearance in 2002 and served as a favorite interpretation point on the CI campus.

Tall, Blond and Thirsty Band performs an energetic show of powerhouse country, blues and rock that will entertain the whole family. Food will be provided by the Alpine Eatery Catering Truck and concertgoers may bring their own favorite beverages. Bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the concert-style seating in an open meadow; flashlights will be helpful after the sun goes down.
