Pony-loving presidential candidate to join judges' table at battle of the beards

SHIPPENSBURG - Bearding Man's 3rd Annual Bearding Man Facial Hair Competition, set for Saturday, Sept. 10, at The Thought Lot in Shippensburg, will feature a number of bearded and beard-loving celebrities at the judge's table.

Vermin Supreme, the hirsute artist, activist and perennial political candidate known for promising free ponies for everyone if he's elected president, will join a lineup of facial hair fiends that includes Scott Sykora host of The Beardcaster podcast, Whiskerina extraordinaire Jodi Lutz, Musketeer craftsman Charles Abadam and 104.7 WAYZ DJ Guy Marshall.

Bearding Man Event Director Adam Crabill, in a press release announcing the event, explained his passion for the contest: “It’s one of those positive community events that, like the beards, is just going to get bigger and better as the years pass.”

Competitors will duel for the best mustache, partial beard, full beard, freestyle beard, fake beard, spicy ginger beard (red beard) and wizard beard (gray/white beard). In addition, families can compete together with their real and fake facial hair in the Heritage Beard category. Profits from this year’s event will benefit The Franklin Learning Center, which provides special education services to several area school districts.

In honor of this year's recipient, there will be a special Teacher Beard category open to all facial-haired (real or fake) education professionals

The evening will be hosted by emcees Ben Nefflen, owner of Bearded Bullpug woodcraft; and Anthony Fontes, the facial hair behind the Beardin’ Ain’t Easy social media presence. Philadelphia’s City Rain will provide musical entertainment.

Bernard’s Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Momma Mike’s Bakery, Denim Coffee Company and The Falafel Shack will be serving all night. Bearding Man is sponsored by several local businesses including Peck’s Mower Repair, Alpha Fitness, Shamrock Barber Shop and the Beistle Company. The title sponsor is Barbatus Grooming of Pittsburgh.
