Capitol Theatre Center: a busy stage in the heart of Franklin County


CHAMBERSBURG - The 2016-2017 live show season at the historic Capitol Theatre, 159 S. Main St., kicks off Saturday, Sept. 24, with Rock Legends, an "audience customized" rock'n'roll revue and tribute that gives the audience the power to vote, through applause, for the songs and music they want to hear from the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s.

The elegantly restored  1927 theater, part of the nonprofit Capitol Theatre Center, is a nostalgic location to experience live shows, concerts, events and movies.

The listing below covers only the upcoming season of live shows to be presented by the Capitol Theatre. The theater also shows films throughout the season and its stage is used by other organizations to present plays, music and dance.

Rock Legends

Starring Billy McGuigan and Tara Vaughan

7 p.m. Saturday, September 24

A unique rock and roll revue created by Billy McGuigan featuring the '50s rock and roll of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Patsy Cline; the psychedelic '60s of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin; the groove of the '70s with the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and piano men Billy Joel and Elton John; and music of the '80s from stars like Tom Petty, U2 and more, all performed by some of the best musicians in the country in a multimedia show.

Psychic Gallery

On Stage with William Stillman

3 p.m. Sunday, October 30

The internationally known, award-winning author of "Autism and the God Connection," psychic William Stillman communicates the intuitive information he receives, then takes audience questions. Stillman's psychic books include "Conversations with Dogs" and the forthcoming "Under Spiritual Siege." He has been consulted on missing person and unsolved homicide cases, and is an investigative resource for the Pennsylvania Paranormal Association.

Shenandoah Reloaded Tour

Featuring Marty Raybon

7 p.m. Thursday, November 17

Considered one of the best country acts in the genre, Shenandoah is fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, which produced hits that include “Two Dozen Roses," “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me,” as well as classics such as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss. Original members Raybon and Mike McGuire recently reunited following a benefit concert for a friend.

The Elvis Experience

Starring David King & The Spin Outs

7 p.m. Saturday, January 14

David King has traveled up and down the East Coast for more than 25 years with his popular Elvis Tribute Show, winning multiple awards from Florida to Memphis to Pennsylvania and performing with legends in the music business, including the Legendary Jordanaires, who sang backup for The King himself.

Mountain Music & Moonshine

Featuring The Plate Scrapers and Mountain Ride

7 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2017

Two local bands playing originals, covers and bluegrass favorites, with whiskey, bourbon and beer served all evening.

The Plate Scrapers offer high energy bluegrass music.Mountain Ride, from the new generation of bluegrassers, brings a unique flair to the traditional and a progressive twist to the original.

The Young Irelanders

3 p.m. Sunday, March 5

The Young Irelanders are eight performers who have Irish traditional music, song and dance running through their veins. They have performed for heads of state and have appeared in the nation's premier theaters, on TV, onstage with Bono and at Sting's private parties.

A cappella & Unplugged – Round 1

7 p.m. Saturday, June 17

(an event produced in partnership with Franklin County Visitors Bureau)

The Round 1 Live Show for the 3rd Annual A cappella & Unplugged Competition will take place on the Capitol Theatre stage. Regional talent will perform before the live Capitol Theatre audience and local celebrity judges, with winners moving on to perform at the 1864 Burning of Chambersburg Light Show and a chance to claim a $500 prize.

To audition, contact Franklin County Visitors Bureau at 866-646-8060. Auditions will be held in mid-May 2017. Performers ages 2 to 102 are invited to audition. Acts can be solo or groups, vocal or unplugged instrumental. Instruments must be able to be carried by performers and not requiring electricity.

Acts must be appropriate for a variety of ages and be something that makes an audience feel good.
