Deadline call for Chambersburg's miniature art exhibit

CHAMBERSBURG >> Entries will be accepted until Oct. 2 for the Council for the Arts' "Miniature Art 2015" exhibition, which will open Nov. 6 and continue through Jan. 8 in the council's gallery at 159 S. Main St.

The miniature art exhibit carries on a tradition of more than 30 years of miniature art shows originated by A Little Gallery, operated in Mont Alto by Becky Dietrich.

"Last year's exhibition was our most successful in years," said the council's exhibit coordinator, Anne Finucane. "We received over 300 miniature works of art created by 87 artists from 23 states, and sold over $7,000 worth of art"

All the works in the show are originals, completed in oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, drawings, hand-pulled prints and sculpture; many are by nationally known artists.

This year's show will be juried and judged by Brian Young, curator since 2011 of University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Maryland. Having earned his bachelor's degree in art history from the University of Michigan and his master's degree from The Ohio State University, he has also been the curator at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland; Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, Arkansas. He is a contributing writer for Bmoreart.com.

Artists may submit up to four original works, each with image size no greater than 4 inches by 6 inches, not to exceed 24 square inches; framed pieces should not exceed 48 square inches, and all works must be framed. Sculpture should not exceed 5 inches in any dimension or 125 cubic inches. Accepted are fine art media — no crafts, jewelry, photography, laser prints or computer-generated artwork).

Awards will be offered as follows: Best of Show, $300; and three merit awards at $100 each. A 35 percent commission will be charged on the sales of all pieces. The entry fee is $25; an additional $15 will be charged for return shipping and insurance on works not hand delivered.
