Shippensburg University's Department of Music and Theatre Arts presents '33 Variations'

SHIPPENSBURG >> Katherine Brandt is a musicologist intrigued by a secret involving the composer, Ludwig von Beethoven.

Near the end of his life, Beethoven became inspired by another man's waltz and in turn created a masterwork, a complex series of 33 piano variations. Why Beethoven became obsessed with a trivial piece of music is the question that propels the action of Moises Kaufman's play, "33 Variations," on stage Oct. 28- Nov. 1 at Shippensburg University's Memorial Auditorium, 1871 Old Main Drive, Shippensburg.

Acclaimed for his 2000 drama "The Laramie Project," Kaufman has now created a seamless mystery that moves effortlessly between 19th century Vienna and the present.

Produced by SU's Department of Music and Theatre Arts and directed by Paris Peet, "33 Variations" will feature Margaret Lucia at the piano.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28-30, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 and 2 p.m. Nov. 1. Doors will open at 1 p.m. for the matinée shows and 7 p.m. for evening shows.
