Memorial Day: Hanover-Adams events honor fallen soldiers


A handful of scheduled events, from parades to picnics, will help Hanover-Adams residents honor those who have died while serving in the armed forced.

Friday

Church plans parade: The Mount Tabor Memorial Day parade and service will be held at 6 p.m. at Mount Tabor Church, 1290 Gablers Road in Menallen Township.

Lt. Col. Gary Harrity of Hanover will be the speaker. Music will be provided by the Apple Core Band and the Upper Adams Elementary School Band. The American Legion Ira Lady Post 262 of Biglerville will also participate.

Following the ceremony, barbecue chicken will be available at the church. Chicken dinners are $8 and are available only by pre-order. To order, call 717-677-6381. In the event of rain, the service will be held at the church.

Saturday

Mount Pleasant plans BBQ: The 7th Annual Memorial Day Chicken Barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. at Double W Farms, 778 Centennial Road in Mount Pleasant Township.

The $7 dinner includes a half-chicken, baked potato, dinner roll and butter, applesauce or coleslaw and a drink. Farmer's Daughter's baked goods will also be available for purchase.

Sunday

Winery to host family picnic: Adams County Winery plans to host a free Memorial Day Weekend Picnic Day from 1 to 4 p.m., according to its website. The family friendly event will take place at the winery, 251 Peach Tree Road in Franklin Township, and will feature live music, lawn games and an on-site food truck. Memorial Day

Hanover to hold annual parade: The Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held at 8:30 a.m.

It will form at 7:30 a.m. on Carlisle Street between Chestnut Street and Library Place and will move toward Mount Olivet Cemetery, where services will be held at the platform near the soldiers' monument.

In case of rain, the program will be held at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Post 14, 201 Carlisle St., Hanover.

Gettysburg plans parade: The Gettysburg Joint Veterans Memorial Day Commission will hold their 148th Annual Memorial Day Parade and ceremony beginning at 2 p.m.

The grand marshal will be Brigadier General David J. Burness. Additionally, the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast will provide musical support.

The parade will begin at Lefever Street, turn on Legion Alley, go south on South Stratton Street, right on West High Street and left on Baltimore Street. The parade will end at the Soldiers' National Cemetery, where a ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the rostrum.

Grammy-nominated singer to perform: Recording artist Ray Owen is scheduled to perform at a free celebration at Lincoln Train Museum, located at 425 Steinwehr Ave., Gettysburg.

Owen will perform "Hats Off to America," a family friendly musical journey that celebrates America's cultural heritage, according to the singer's website.
