South Western: Zombies run for early childhood education

Humans will be running for their lives this October, hoping to cross the 5K finish line without turning into a zombie.

South Western High School's Key Club is hosting a Zombie Invasion 5K Walk and Run on Oct. 24 to support early childhood education, Key Club President and senior Madison Bortner said.

The club's goal is to raise money for one organization each year as part of its service projects, Bortner said. Last year's fundraising event was powder-puff football, but with zombies trending this year, an undead-themed run was a given, she said.

Each community member who participates in the event will be given a belt with multiple flags attached. Club members, who will be portraying zombies, will try to steal flags off the belts of human runners.

The goal is to reach the end with at least one flag, otherwise the runner has become infected, Bortner said.

Refreshments will be included and a laser tag event between zombies and students will take place after the run for an additional $5, she said.
