5 things to do in York this weekend

York has some great entertainment to look forward to this April Fool's weekend – and we're not foolin'.

From ballet to comedy to music, there's something for almost every taste.

Here are five events happening in York.

Go downtown for First Friday

There are plenty of reasons to head downtown Friday night, including dance parties, street entertainment, beer samples and puppies. Yes, you can play with adoptable dogs and puppies at My Girlfriend's Wardrobe, 41 W. Market St., this First Friday. Click below for a list of First Friday festivities you won't want to miss.

See comedian David Cross

The comedian behind lovable characters such as Tobias Fünke from "Arrested Development" and Principle Gold from "She's The Man." is headed to York this weekend. You can see him perform his comedy act Monday at Penn State York's Pullo Center.  The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Also happening this weekend is an April Fool's Weekend Comedy Jam at New Grounds Roasting Company, 284 W. Market St., York. You'll laugh out loud during this performance by Troy Rawlings, "the relationship guru of comedy." The show starts at 5 p.m. Saturday. Visit newgroundscoffee.com for more information.

Go to a Sign of the Wagon concert

Take our FlipSide panelist JJ Sheffer's suggestion and watch Texas musician Daniel Markham play a house concert at Sign of the Wagon, 154 E. Philadelphia St., on Sunday. Also performing will be Oklahoma singer/songwriter John Calvin Abney. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

See a ballet

Watch as one of your favorite fairy tales, "Sleeping Beauty," comes to life on the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center stage Sunday. The show, performed by the Moscow Festival Ballet Company, starts at 2 p.m. at 50 N. George St., York.

Also happening at the Strand this weekend is York Symphony Orchestra's "Lullaby of Birdland," a performance featuring pieces named for nature's original aviators. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Visit www.mystrandcapitol.org for more information.

Try a new recipe

Get creative in the kitchen this weekend with some new spring recipes, courtesy of York and Harrisburg chefs. You can make Roasted Beet Root Hummus for an appetizer and Chicken Alfresco for an entree. Don't forget to save room for a Coconut Lime Paris Brest dessert!
