7 ways to go green in York for Earth Day
Happy Friday, and happy Earth Day! Here are seven ways to celebrate green and healthy living this weekend.
Go for a hike
Take an Earth Day hike along the rail trail at Loucks Mill Road and Route 30 with the York Hiking Club Friday. The group will meet at 3 p.m. at the parking lot next to the Rutters Farm Store at Masonic Drive.
Attend a TMI Film Launch Party
Local filmmaker Jill Murphy Long is holding two launch parties this weekend for her upcoming feature film “Meltdown” about the aftermath of the Three Mile Island partial nuclear meltdown in 1979. The idea behind the film is not only to tell locals’ survivor stories, but also to get people to think about safer options for renewable energy and to be aware of the after-effects of using nuclear power. At the parties – held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at 2301 Brandywine Lane, York and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Creative York, 10 N. Beaver St., York – locals can watch the film’s proof-of-concept trailer, meet the filmmaker, tell their own survivor stories and sign up to be an extra in the film.
Go Green in the City
With more than 75 vendors selling artisan crafts, green products, upcycled or vintage items and locally sourced foods, this is your chance to shop green for Earth Day. You’ll find items ranging from vintage clothing and jewelry to herbal body products to upcycled home décor along North Beaver Street in downtown York. Click here for a sneak peek from local vendors. The street fair, held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, will also include live music, free yoga, food trucks and a variety of children's activities, such as a petting zoo and hay bale maze.
See recycled art
You’ll find amazing works of art created from recycled trash at the York County Solid Waste Authority’s high school art exhibit at Creative York West, 118 W. Philadelphia St., this weekend. When the light shines just right, one piece created by York Catholic High School student Hadley Deller reflects a shadow of a treasure chest and two hands holding jewels on the wall. The exhibit will remain open through 2 p.m. Saturday.
Celebrate at an Earth Day Festival
Celebrate our planet with music, vendors, workshops and children’s activities Saturday at Mechanicsburg’s Earth Day Festival. The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Mechanicsburg. For details, visit mechanicsburgearthdayfest.com.
Get to work in your garden
It looks like we’re headed for more beautiful sunshine this weekend, which gives you the perfect excuse to tend to your garden. According to certified state horticulturalist George Weigel, the time to plant is now. Most vegetables should be in the ground before Mother’s Day, he said. Find geocaching spots near you
This outdoor hobby is part exploration and part scavenger hunt and a fun way to celebrate Earth Day. Use a GPS device or geocaching app to find geocaches – small containers hidden all over the world by other geocachers.
