5 things to do in York this weekend
Happy Friday, York!
It looks like we're headed for a bit of soggy weather Friday and Sunday, but there's still plenty of local entertainment to enjoy. Get to your favorite downtown restaurant Friday for $5 bar specials, stop by the Fairie Festival when the rain lets up on Saturday and catch some great live music acts on Sunday.
Here are five ways to spend your weekend in York.
Grab a drink for Fifth Friday
$5 bar menus are back at select downtown restaurants for Fifth Friday! Spend your Friday night downtown at one of five restaurants – The Left Bank, Otto's Kitchen & Cocktails, Mudhook Brewing Co., Holy Hound Taproom and Tutoni's – for $5 bar snacks, drink specials and good company. The next Fifth Friday won't take place until July 29, so take advantage of the good eats and drinks while you can!
Put on your fairy wings
The Spoutwood Farm May Day Fairie Festival might be just what you need to brighten up a dreary weekend. The three-day festival held Friday through Sunday will be filled with colorful fairies, nature spirits, green men and more. If you go, expect a variety of vendors, music, fairy habitats, parades and surprises all weekend long.
Go to the opera
For the first time in its 83-year history, the York Symphony Orchestra will stage an opera at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. YSO musical director Lawrence Golan says Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutti" is the perfect opera to bring to York for the first time. It has great music, beautiful sets and costumes – and it's a rom-com!
Race Against Racism
Love to run? Come out to the Race Against Racism Saturday morning to show your support for the YWCA's mission to eliminate racism and empower women. Serious runners might want to do the timed 5K race. But those looking for some fun can get colorful with an untimed color splash. During the race, you'll be showered with colored powder along the route. Don't want to race? The runners could always use supporters from the sidelines! Hear live music
Looking for a great local concert?
Local bands will perform at St. Rose of Lima Elementary School's third annual Sip Into Summer Wine & Beer Festival Saturday. The event, held from 1 to 6 p.m. will include wine and beer samples from Pennsylvania and Maryland wineries and breweries, food trucks, craft vendors and live music. Tickets are $35 at the gate.
On Sunday, the Quebe Sisters will perform an Americana concert, featuring three fiddles, three-part harmony, guitar and bass at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York. The sisters are only in their 20s, but they love to fiddle and sing old-school Texas country tunes.
Red Lion gospel singer Barchue Guar will also perform Sunday at a free album-release concert at Seventh Day Adventist Church. The show starts at 6 p.m. The singer is a Liberian refugee who survived the civil war in Liberia by singing for food. Since coming to America, he's made it to the top 16 on NBC's "The Sing-Off" with his group Messiah's Men and performed all across the country. Now, he's releasing his first solo album in an effort to raise money for underprivileged children in Liberia. Click here to hear him sing.
