7 area festivals to know about this weekend


Summer festival season is officially upon us. And we have a jam-packed lineup of weekend events to prove it.

Local festivals will celebrate everything from bacon and beer to art and music. You name the festival – it's happening this weekend.

So, no excuses to stay at home on the couch. Get outside and enjoy the start of summer at these fun area events.

Pigs on Penn Bacon Festival

Local bacon lovers’ favorite event of the year is back! Come hungry and fill up on 18 bacon recipes from 11 local butchers at the Market and Penn Farmers Market. The festival – held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday – will also include specially made treats from area vendors, a hog calling contest and a Bacon President competition.  Oh, and did we mention there will be bacon milkshakes? Yum!

Glen Rock Arts & Brew Fest

Get yourself in shape with a 5K Fun Run before filling up on food and beer Saturday at the Glen Rock Arts & Brew Fest in downtown Glen Rock. The run starts at 8 a.m., followed by shopping from more than 100 regional artisans and vendors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. along the York County Heritage Rail Trail and beer samples from 1 to 5 p.m. in Ruins Park. Live music and family entertainment – like balloon twisting and “Star Wars” characters – can also be found on two stages throughout the day.

Street Rod Nationals

More than 3,500 vintage automobiles will swarm the York Fairgrounds for the 43rd annual Street Rod Nationals East this weekend. The cars will be on display for viewing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Although you’ll probably also be able to see them driving through the streets of York all weekend long. Other attractions at the event include free seminars, street rod contests, auto equipment manufacturers and dealers, arts and craft vendors, live music, prize giveaways and a quilt display. Songs & Suds Festival

Music and beer. Can’t go wrong with that combination. Local bands, including Dr. Slothclaw, Hexbelt, Buzzard Luck, The Blue Soles, GMO, Tony Ryder and the Wild West, will perform from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Vulcan Park in Red Lion. Local breweries, including Wyndridge Farms, Black Cap Brewing Company, South County, Something Wicked and Molly Pitcher Brewing will be pouring pints. Admission is free, and pints are $5. Proceeds will benefit the Indian Steps Museum.

Maryland Folklife Festival

If you’re looking for family fun, you’ll find it in Baltimore this weekend. This free festival will celebrate Maryland’s unique culture and traditions from arts and music to crafts and food. Festivities include live entertainment, traditional food demonstrations, craft vendors, marbles tournaments and other cultural activities from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at 3134 Eastern Ave., East Baltimore. Children can also participate in workshops, where they’ll learn to make piñatas and Cambodian jewelry. Click here for more details.

Kiwanis Be-In

Sundays are for relaxation. At least, that’s what the organizers of the Kiwanis Be-In think. Spend the morning under the trees at a free yoga session with Nicole Montanarelli at 11 a.m. Live music will follow from noon to 6 p.m. Local acts include: The Wild Hymns, Bumbada Women Drummers, John Terlazzo & Voices in the Hall, Blue Elephant, The New Rotics and Boompop Coalition.

Grape Blossom & Music Festival

Help Naylor Winery celebrate the coming grape-growing season with live music, dancing, local vendors, wine tasting and vineyard tours. Festivities run from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Stewartstown winery, and will include music from The Red Eye Kings, Blind Ellis, The Son of Jane, Jeff Stike Band, The Blue Soles and American Hollar. Admission is $5 for adults and free for those under 21.
