5 things to do in York this weekend

Happy weekend, York!

Looks like we're headed for a couple of bright and sunny days, so be sure to get outside and catch some sunshine.

From outdoor concerts to fruit-picking adventures, here are five fun things to do around the county this weekend.

Go to a summer concert

Nothing says summertime like outdoor concerts, especially when they’re free! From an orchard pavilion to a spot along the river, York County has some great outdoor venues for free summer music. On Friday night, unwind after work with a cooler of drinks, a group of friends and a high-energy set from local folk and blues band Indian Summer Jars at Shank’s Mare in Wrightsville. Music goes from 6 to 9 p.m.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, stop by Brown’s Orchards and Farm Market in Loganville for a hand-dipped ice cream cone, barbecue and live music from local bluegrass band Lovesick Hillbillies from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

A free summer concert will also be held at Springettsbury Township Park at 7 p.m.

See ‘Secret Life of Pets’ – and bring one home

Ever wonder what you’re pets do when you’re not home? That’s what the new animated children’s movie “The Secret Life of Pets” seeks to find out. And after you watch it on opening day, you’ll be able to play with and take home a pet of your own.

On Friday, the SPCA of York County and Frank Theatres Queensgate Stadium 13 are teaming up to host a Pet Adoption Event at the theater. From noon to 4 p.m., you’ll have the chance to meet, take photos and play with adoptable pets from the shelter.

The event will also include giveaways and a “Secret Life of Pets” contest. All you have to do is submit an original drawing, photo or 30-second video of something your pet does in secret. Submissions will be accepted at the theater or at QueensGate@FrankCompanies.com through July 30. Prizes include free movie tickets, concessions, pet supplies and a free checkup at a local veterinary clinic. Visit franktheatres.com/special-events for more info.

Woof and Wine

Can’t make it to the theater Friday? You can still meet and play with adoptable pups at Saturday’s Woof & Wine event at Brown’s Orchards & Farm Market. The festival also includes vendors, six wine tastings, light refreshments and live music by Four/Five Jazz Band from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Visit www.brownsorchards.com for more info.

Gaze at the stars

Bring the kids or a date and get a look at the summer sky up close. You’ll explore the stars, planets, nebulae and the moon at this public starwatch at John C. Rudy County Park in York. The free event goes from 8 to 10 p.m. Call 717-840-7740 if conditions are cloudy, or visit yorkcountyparks.org for more information.

Have an outdoor adventure

Want to be adventurous this weekend? Our outdoor adventure reporter Kate Penn put together a guide to outdoor fun in York for every weekend this month. This weekend’s adventures include a five-mile run and fruit-picking.

On Saturday, get moving with the Shoe House 5-miler at Faith Alive Community Church in Springettsbury Township. You’ll come for the race and stay for the ice cream. Visit usroadrunning.com for more info.

Then on Sunday, spend a relaxing afternoon picking fruit at a farm near you. No berry tastes better than the ones you pick yourself, Penn said. Find a farm at pickyourown.org.
