Between welcoming a Hollywood actor into the band and saying goodbye to three band members, York-based indie rock group Kingsfoil has gone through quite a transition in the last few years.

Actor Frankie Muniz , famous for his role on the Fox sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle," joined the band as a drummer in April 2012. But two years later, he was gone due to conflicts with his Hollywood schedule .

Kingsfoil then picked up a guitarist and a drummer last spring after Muniz left. But six months later, they were gone too.

"When you go on tour with somebody, you really find out if you get along or not," Kingsfoil lead singer and guitarist Jordan Davis said.

So now, it's back to the basics for Kingsfoil, as the three original band members — Davis, Tristan Martin on guitar and keys and Tim Warren on bass — prepare to release a new album this summer. The album, recorded at Sign of the Wagon in York and at Davis' York home, is the first album Kingsfoil has written, recorded and produced by themselves, Davis said.

"We've come out of (the transition) still being in control of all of our music and still being independent," Davis said. "It's nice to still be able to do everything we want to do (as a) three-piece."

Davis said he thinks Kingsfoil's sound has evolved since the release of the band's last EP "The Brave Love." Since the band was able to write, record and produce its new album, Davis said the band feels more in control of its music.

"The music we're releasing is untouched by anyone else," he said. "Everything is coming directly from how we want it to sound and the words we want going directly to our fans."

"In Our Blood," the first single of Kingsfoil's new untitled album, will be released May 1. This will be the band's first new release in a year and a half.

The song is an upbeat anthem-type tune, the kind of song you listen to with the windows rolled down on your way to the beach, Davis said. Even after the band's transitions, it still sounds like a classic Kingsfoil song.

Davis said the idea for "In Our Blood" came to him after he realized so many songs on the radio now are about the idea that love makes you feel at home.

"'In Our Blood' is about how being in love isn't always about being at home, and puppies and flowers and a beautiful feeling," Davis said. "Sometimes it's really hard. You have to really work for it."

This idea can be seen in the music video for "In Our Blood," which will also be released May 1. The video, shot in downtown York and the countryside in Stewartstown, will show the idea that music is home for Kingsfoil, Davis said.

After the "In Our Blood" release, a new single from the album will be released each month until the album release sometime this summer.

The album will feature the mandolin and saxophone, which is something new for Kingsfoil.

"This has been a really nice place for us to try some new things and be more in charge of our own recordings," Davis said.

Fans can look forward to songs inspired by changes the band has experienced from losing band members to the death of Davis' father, Chris Davis, last year.

"(We) had a lot of ideas and things to write about from that," he said.

After the album is released, Davis said Kingsfoil plans to do two release shows in York and Lancaster before going on a regional tour in late summer.
