Gordon Mote sings and plays piano May 31 in Five Forks BIC, Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO >> It has been said that when Gordon Mote sits down at a piano and sings, he takes listeners on a trip they will never forget.

Country and gospel music artist Gordon Mote will sing and play at 6 p.m. May 31 in Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church, 9244 Five Forks Road.

His press material says Mote's music "reaches beyond age and style, right to the heart. You will be inspired by his story, encouraged by his message and amazed by his talent as he sees life in a whole new way."

Mote, who was born blind, surprised his parents at the age of 3 when he sat down at the piano and played "Jesus Loves Me" with both hands. He loved music as he was growing up, and attended Nashville's Belmont University.

Two days after graduation, Lee Greenwood asked him to join the band.

Mote said he does have days when he feels discouraged because of everything he has lost because he cannot see.

"But I have learned that I have to step back and think about all the things that I really do have," he said from his home in Nashville. "I have an awesome family; I have a wonderful wife, I have three wonderful daughters. I have an incredible job, though it's not as glamorous as people think it is.

"Some days I wake up and think of all the things I have to do and start groaning. And then I realize that I get to play music for a living, and I've been all over the world to do it, and I do a lot of playing right here in Nashville. I get to do things that even very few musicians have been able to do. I really have been blessed."

Mote's big break came when he substituted for another blind piano player on the Alan Jackson tribute song "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning." That was the first No. 1 single Mote played on. Since then he has played for Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Lionel Richie, Allison Krauss and many others, including the Gaither Vocal Band.

In 2009 and 2011, Mote was awarded Music Row Magazine's Instrumentalist Award. He is also a two-time Academy of Country Music award winning Piano/Keyboard Player of The Year.

Mote also sings and writes music. Most of his songs are what is known, at least throughout the South, as "sacred music," songs in praise of Jesus.

A few of his recorded songs are: "Meanwhile Back at the Cross," "Faith Like That," GGod of New Beginnings" and "Call Me Gone."

"I want to write songs that say, Lord, I've been so blessed, but if you never do another thing for me, I'd still love you for you," he said.

"I feel that I have been given much more than I deserve," he said.

"That's the only way to look at it, or else I'll go crazy. If you think about it, we all get more than we deserve. Every breath we take is a blessing."
