Shippensburg Band presents rousing summer concerts

SHIPPENSBURG >> Listen for the drumbeat this summer in Shippensburg: Parks and other downtown sites will be marching to the beat as Shippensburg's three bands offer concerts for the public to enjoy, from toe-tapping tunes to get up and dance sets.

The best part is, all the concerts are free.

The Shippensburg Town Band, Shippensburg German Band, and Shippensburg Swing Band have multiple performances scheduled for the summer of 2015.

The summer series kicks off at 7 p.m. June 14, with the German Band performing at Veterans Memorial Park, Park Place. The band, officially called "Blaskapelle Shippensburg," performs authentic German and Austrian songs from Bohemia, Bavaria, and Tirol, with some of the beloved American German Band songs. There will be rolling beer-drinking songs, traditional melodies, and lively polkas and waltzes. Feel free to get up and step out!

The Town Band will perform at 7 p.m. June 16 at Tiger Stadium, Cleversburg Road in Cleversburg. The summer selections of the Town Band include the following titles: Medleys of Stage and Screen — Gerswin melodies, music from the film "Rocky," classic movie tunes and pop sounds from the recent film "Jersey Boys; Songs of Grace, Glory, and Faith; an Armed Forces Salute for all branches of the military; and rousing marches.

On July 7, join the Town Band at the opening of the new Shippensburg Senior Center, Branch Creek Place, at 115 N. Fayette St.

The Town Band will then perform July 26 at Veterans Memorial Park, followed by the Swing Band on July 30, also at the park, for traditional outdoor concerts. Those attending should take lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

The 20-piece Shippensburg Swing Band, directed by Vicki Baker, plays a variety of music from Elvis and Glenn Miller, to the "Chicken Dance."

The Shippensburg Town Band, directed by Carl Sponenberg, is a community band that has gathered many members from Shippensburg, and surrounding area to make music and share it with others. They rehearse from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the band room at Shippensburg Area Senior High School, 201 Eberly Road. Anyone who plays a band instrument may attend a rehearsal and join the band.
