7 acts to see at York's Strand-Capitol this fall


Grammy-winning singers, jazz musicians, comedy acts and family-friendly performances are headed to the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center this season.

Here’s a preview of the theater's 2016-17 lineup.

Sarah McLachlan – Aug. 1

The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter is known for emotional ballads, such as “Angel” and “Adia.” She’s sold 40 million albums worldwide.

Chris Botti – Sept. 30

Since the release of his 2004 album “When I Fall In Love,” the trumpeter and composer has become the largest-selling American instrumentalist.

David Sedaris – Oct. 17

Comedian, NPR humorist and bestselling author of “Naked, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” and “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls” returns to the Strand stage after performing at the venue in April 2015.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Oct. 20

This family band is made up of seven brothers who were taught to play music by their father and jazz musician Kelan Phil Cohran, known for his collaborations with Sun Ra Arkestra in Chicago.

The Songs of Willie Dixon – Nov. 12

Rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters will team up with blues singers Mud Morganfield and Billy Branch to pay tribute to the influential Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician Willie Dixon.

Shanghai Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China – Nov. 13

One of the most competitive acrobatic companies in China will take the Strand stage this fall.

Jake Shimabukuro – Nov. 19

This ukulele master is known for his energetic performances of songs, including Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Tickets go on sale to Strand-Capitol members at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25 and to the public at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, according to a news release.

A 10 percent discount will be available for members of the public who purchase tickets to two or more 2016-17 season shows. Strand-Capitol members will save 15 percent.
