DreamWrights to perform Broadway benefit cabaret

DreamWrights Youth & Family Theatre is flipping things around for a cabaret fundraiser March 5.

A cast of 18 singers, both children and adults, will perform 27 songs – but they won’t be performed the way you’re used to hearing them.

The event, called Flippin’ Broadway, is about giving performers a chance to sing songs that they would not normally be cast to perform, according to a news release. While the song “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserable” is traditionally sung by the middle-aged male character Jean Val Jean, the Flippin’ Broadway version will feature a performance by a teenage girl.

The idea for the benefit was conceived by DreamWrights actor and guest director Rodd Robertson.

“A few years ago, another actor and I were discussing songs we would never get to sing in a traditional Broadway show,” he said in the news release. “We were having a great time imagining what it would be like to perform songs as those characters, and suddenly we looked at each other and asked why we couldn’t stage a show where we could perform those songs.”

From 7 to 10 p.m., guests will have the opportunity to imagine what Broadway musicals might be like if they were “flipped,” he said.

Tickets are $15 and are available online at www.dreamwrights.org or by calling 717-848-8623.

A selection of desserts will be available for purchase during an extended intermission.

Proceeds benefit DreamWrights Youth & Family Theatre.
