You’re 21 years old, and you’re looking for a fun place to go on a Friday night.

Chances are, DreamWrights Center for Community Arts isn’t the first place that comes to mind.

But, starting this Friday, it might be worth a visit.

DreamWrights will host its first-ever 21+ event – an open mic night – from 8-11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.

The center for community arts currently offers theater programming for youth, families and adults 55 and older. But this will be the first attempt to reach young adults.

Since its $2.5 million capital campaign kickoff celebration in June, DreamWrights has been working to expand programming to accommodate people of different ages and interests, marketing coordinator Hilary Trout said.

Most people know DreamWrights as a youth and family theater. But this new programming could include events like poetry slams and painting classes.

“We want to become a center for community arts and not only a theater,” Trout said.

Most of this new programming will come starting next summer, after DreamWrights’ capital campaign has afforded the completion of a new studio performance space, a concessions and dining area and upgraded restrooms, she said.

Construction is expected to begin in January.

But for now, DreamWrights will test the waters with Friday’s open mic night.

“We’ve had a lot of people say, ‘Hey, we’d be interested if you would do something like this,’” Trout said. “The idea for it rose to the top of our to-do list.”

Tutoni’s Restaurant will provide a cash bar, and York City Pretzel Company will sell pretzels, she said.

Father-son blues duo 10 Gauge is scheduled to perform a few acoustic numbers, but the event will be open to anyone 21-and-over who wishes to participate.

Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door and can be purchased at www.dreamwrights.org or by calling 717-848-8623.

Trout said DreamWrights has more events like this in the works for teens and all ages.

“We’re excited to reach out to audiences we don’t typically have programming for,” she said.

Stay tuned for details about more upcoming events.
