Community honors the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG - The Annual Chambersburg Community Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg.

The service, which celebrates the ongoing spiritual impact of King’s life and ministry, will be led by clergy and laity from the community. The speaker will be Bishop Roberta L. Thomas, senior pastor of Fountain Gate Church Ministries and overseer of Kingdom Covenant Ministries. Special music will be presented by the CASHS Choristers under the direction of Elizabeth Stahl.

Thomas is the founder of “Equipping the Saints School of Ministry," a training program for church leaders. She serves on her denomination’s board of directors, apostolic council and college of bishops. She has ministered internationally in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, as well as in the eastern United States, and is actively involved in the Harrisburg community. She has been awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophical theology from North Carolina College of Theology.

Special features of the service will include the presentation of student essays written in honor and recognition of King’s contributions, compiled in a project supervised for the Chambersburg Area School District by Dr. Gwen Durham and Gladys Leon; as well as a special tribute to King dedicated by the YMCA Teen Achievers.

There will be a reception following the service in the church social hall.

The service is co-sponsored by the Chambersburg Area Ministerial Alliance, the Evangelical Fellowship of Cumberland Valley, the Chambersburg Ministerium, and the United Churches of the Chambersburg Area.
