Middletown brewery to debut at York's Brew Kids

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works is one of at least 13 places that will be featured at the event, which returns to the York Expo Center on May 14.

During his 10 years in the U.S. Navy, Pat Devlin got into craft brewing, using everything from empty Gatorade bottles to coffee filters to make beer while deployed.

In May 2014, Devlin prepared to leave the service. He got together with three friends from Susquenita High School in Perry County — Matt Fritz, Tony DeLellis and Ben Ramsay — at a Buffalo Wild Wings with an idea in mind: to start his own brewery.

“‘This is what I’d like to do, if you guys are interested,’” said Devlin, 34, of Silver Spring Township, recalling the conversation. “And they all said they’d love to make it happen.”

Now, Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works is hoping to open by July on South Union Street near West Emaus Street in Middletown. It’s one of at least 13 places that will be featured at Brew Kids on the Block, a craft beer event that’s set to return to the York Expo Center on May 14.

Brew Kids on the Block showcases breweries that are five years or younger. And Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works is one of the new businesses attending this year.

"It's not about us making money. It's about promoting the small guys,” said Matthew Davis, one of the co-organizers of Brew Kids on the Block, which follows the Taste of Pennsylvania Wine & Music Festival.

"We want to try to put them to the forefront, without any of the competition from the big guys."

Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works new location is expected to have between 200 and 240 seats. It’s attached to the Elks Theatre, which was established in 1911.

Wine festivals to go to in May, June

Tony Schneider is the head brewer of Tattered Flag Brewery & Still Works, coming over from Appalachian Brewing Co.

Schneider said the business plans to have beers including an India pale ale, pilsner and breakfast stout available year-round. About five scratch beers will also be on tap. Later, he said the company hopes to start distilling products such as whiskey, vodka and rum.

The co-owners are planning to bring the following beers to Brew Kids on the Block:

  • Manghost (Triple IPA with mangoes and ghost peppers)
  • TMI PA (IPA)
  • Breakfast stout
  • Berliner weisse

In the meantime, Devlin, who serves as CEO, said the business is doing what it can for the community. That includes raffles and events, for example, benefiting the local fire department.

“It’s an important thing to us,” he said. “We feel like you support those who support you.”
