3 York County events animal enthusiasts will love


If you love animals, you'll love these events coming up in York County.

Each event raises money for organizations that benefit stray, abused and neglected cats and dogs.

So whether you're sipping wine at Wine for Whiskers or renting a dog at Dogs' Day in the Park, you're doing it for a good cause.

Here are three animal-friendly events you won't want to miss.

1. Wine for Whiskers - Aug. 23

Support the kitties at a wine tasting event in Seven Valleys this weekend.

From 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, guests can enjoy $5 wine tastings of City Kitty, Fat Cat Wine and more at Four Springs Winery, 50 Main St., Seven Valleys.

One dollar of each ticket will be donated to Heavenly Paws Animal Shelter, a no-kill stray cat rescue in Seven Valleys. For more information about Heavenly Paws, visit its Facebook page.

The event also includes shopping and raffles as well as food and dessert provided by Sweet Willows Creamery.

2. Wine Tasting in the Park - Aug. 29

Enjoy an afternoon of drinks, food, entertainment and shopping Saturday, Aug. 29 at the first-ever Wine Tasting in the Park.

Festivities last from noon to 6 p.m. at Elickers Grove Park, 511 Roths Church Road, Spring Grove.

Guests can taste wine from three area wineries - High Rock Winery of Hanover, Jackson Square Vineyard of Spring Grove and Buddy Boy Winery of Duncannon - and munch on foods from Shiloh Fire Dept. and Bricker's Famous French Fries.

About 26 vendors will sell handmade crafts, accessories, food and gifts.DJ Rob Weaver will also provide entertainment from noon to 2 p.m., followed by Robin Work & Friends from 2 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $15 or $10 for designated drivers and can be purchased at the gate or in advance at Eventbrite.com.

Proceeds benefit Borough Animal Response krew (BARk). The West York-based volunteer group responds to calls of pets lost, found, injured, abused or trapped.

3. Dogs' Day in the Park - Sept. 12

Bring your dogs to Dogs' Day in the Park Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Marge Goodfellow Community Park in New Freedom.

The event starts at 9 a.m. with a 1-mile Mutt Strutt walk on the York County Rail Trail.

Then, festivities including demonstrations from local K-9 units, Flyball, Disc Dog competitions, Cutest Face, Best Kisser, Best Wagger, Clean UR Plate and Costume contests, follow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event also includes vendors, rescue organizations, a bake sale and food catered by Smokin' Carnes and Bricker's Famous French Fries.

For those who don't have a dog, you can rent one at the event. Adoptable dogs will be available for walks around the park and playtime.

The event, hosted by the Animal Rescue Inc. of New Freedom, benefits no-kill shelters that care for abused, neglected and stray dogs and cats.
