Not for Jerry Seinfeld the glitz and dry heat of Las Vegas — nope, he's doing his first residency deal in his hometown of New York at an Upper West Side theater not far from his famous TV apartment.

Seinfeld and the Madison Square Garden Company, which owns the Beacon Theatre, announced Tuesday that the comedian beloved (and sorely missed) by millions since the end of Seinfeld in 1998, will start a residency at the Beacon in January, with plans for monthly performances in 2016.

Jerry Seinfeld: The Homestand, as the show will be titled, will be Seinfeld's first-ever residency.

In fact, the concept of "residency" is fairly rare for New York: In recent years, only Billy Joel has set himself up as a permanent act. He's the first-ever music franchise at Madison Square Garden, alongside the Knicks, the Rangers and New York Liberty at the self-described "World’s Most Famous Arena."

Seinfeld will be doing his thing at the Beacon, up town from the Garden, in the neighborhood where Seinfeld himself has lived and where his eponymous character and his kooky friends lived during the long (nine years), hugely successful (and lucrative) run of Seinfeld.

Usually, performers, especially musicians and singers, set up lucrative residencies in Vegas palaces, performing in glamorous luxury without the tedious grind of touring. Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain and even Prince, have all made successes of their Vegas residencies in recent years.

The news was greeted with some enthusiasm on Twitter.

The Beacon announced that tickets will go on sale on Dec. 7 at 10 am shows on Jan. 7, Feb. 17, Mar. 2, April 14, May 5, and June 8.

Since the end of the TV "show about nothing," Seinfeld has done occasional tours and appeared on occasionally on TV. In 2012, he started a web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, for which he was nominated for an Emmy in 2013, adding to his other Emmy nominations and one win.
