Low turnout at York voting wards

Voter turnout is typically low for off-year, or non-presidential elections. One York voting precinct personified that during Tuesday's election beyond a simple percentage.

Two of five workers were absent from the poll at Hannah Penn K-8, with one calling in sick and another being a no-show, said Francisco Escalera, judge of elections for the city's second precinct in its 12th ward.

But with only 71 out of 1,026 registered voters having cast ballots as of 6:30 pm., the two absent poll workers didn't impact the election board, said Melissa Laramy, the precinct's majority inspector.

"We're understaffed and we've done just fine," Laramy said.

Jackson K-8 had 246 voters out of about 2,000 turn out with two hours left in the voting day, according to Shirley Towles, judge of elections for the city's 15th ward.

Amid the low voter turnout, however, are the usual voters — mostly older people, Towles said. Some have had strokes and are in wheelchairs, but they come out for every election, she said.

"It's sad more younger people don't come out," she said.
