York company lays fiber under Hudson River

A fiber optic line expected to increase Internet speeds between New York and Virginia connected Manhattan to New Jersey.

A fiber optic line expected to increase Internet speeds and create data redundancies between New York City and northern Virginia made its way west Tuesday, connecting Manhattan to New Jersey.

The fiber line, planned to eventually pass through York, was installed inside a manhole in Weehawken, N.J., bringing broadband infrastructure underneath the Hudson River.

Executives from United Fiber & Data, a York-based telecommunications company, were on hand to witness the benchmark they referred to as a key milestone toward the company's future expansion.

Slated to run through parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, the fiber line is expected to reach the Delaware River around August, said Bill Hynes, CEO and founder of UFD.
