Two-lane bowling alley coming to Hanover

The Sound Room is an entertainment venue in downtown Hanover that offers live music, comedy and spoken word events.

But that's not all.

Owner Shannon Lanier, who also operates Dark Ronin Films Studios, is in the process of adding a cafe and a two-lane bowling alley.

Yes, a bowling alley.

He saw a post on Facebook from the Gettysburg Community Theater that indicated it was looking to get rid of the two bowling lanes situated in its basement. Lanier immediately went to check it out.

With the space available at 106 Broadway to accommodate the addition, Lanier thought, "Why not?"

The lanes were formerly used by members of the Elks Lodge of Gettysburg, which used to be located at the theater's current address, said Chad-Alan Carr, founding executive and artistic director of the community theater.

But once the lodge was sold, the building sat empty for many years, and the bowling lanes stayed in the basement since the 50s.

Now that the Gettysburg Community Theatre is utilizing the building, Carr wants to use the space the lanes currently occupy for additional storage as their productions continue to grow, he said.

"We have a lot of need for space for costume storage," Carr said.

Lanier wants to create a place for people to hang out that's not just a bar or brewery, he said.

The Sound Room offers live entertainment, game tournaments and movie screenings. And if you're hungry, The Sound Room's new cafe addition will offer sandwiches, soup, coffee, teas and smoothies, Lanier said.

He plans to open The Sound Room six days a week from 10 a.m. to midnight and host events each night toward the end of June. The bowling alley will be completely installed by that time, Lanier hopes.

Bowling balls will be provided to guests, and tennis shoes are OK to wear, he said. As for price, Lanier is planning to charge $10 an hour.

"We want to make it useful for everyone, and the community needs something downtown as things are developing," he said. "It's a great thing to have more of a hangout instead of a bar scene."
