One year after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, we remember Pulse nightclub

Healing is just the beginning

The doors of the Pulse nightclub are still closed, but it’s not uncommon to see people outside leaving flowers or messages of support at the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. It’s been a year since Omar Mateen opened fire inside the popular LGBTQ nightclub and killed 49 people. And it was only one of many violent incidents against the LGBTQ community.  A new report found that 2016 was the deadliest year on record for the LGBTQ community. What's going wrong? "We're not sending clear messages that LGBTQ lives are valued," according to Shelby Chestnut of the New York City Anti-Violence Project.

The hits keep on coming for Trump

Yes, Donald Trump is president, but he still owns his business empire. That’s a problem, says a “major lawsuit” announced Monday against Trump by attorneys general in D.C. and Maryland. Trump’s businesses take payments from foreign governments, which the officials argue violates anti-corruption clauses in the Constitution. Consider Saudi Arabia, which just happened to spend $270,000 at a Trump hotel while in the U.S. to lobby the ease of a terrorism law. (A Trump official said those profits will go to the U.S. Treasury.) And that's not the only legal hurdle the president is facing. The president's "travel ban" suffered another string of setbacks Monday when a second federal appeals court said it discriminated based on nationality and exceeded his presidential authority.

This German grocery store chain is trying to take over the USA

Hallo, Aldi! The German grocery store chain is planning to open 900 new stores in the next five years. Aldi, which stands for Albrecht Diskont (get it?), has been described as a Trader Joe’s style discount store. The chain is smaller than your average grocery store and keeps costs low by stocking house brands such as Southern Grove (nuts and dried fruit) and Savoritz (crackers). While you may never have heard of Aldi, the chain’s been around for a while. The first store opened in Iowa in 1976, and there are currently 1,600 stores in 35 states. So, will your grocery store pick change soon, or nein?

The kids are (not) alright

The golden state is in trouble. A serious asthma crisis is afflicting communities around the Salton Sea, located in the southeastern corner of California. A nearby county has the highest rate of asthma-related emergency room visits for children in the state, and it’s about to get worse. The Salton Sea is a disaster in slow motion, from toxic dust storms to disappearing birds. A new USA TODAY NETWORK project, “California’s Dying Sea,” documents the panic in an area beset by broken promises and last-ditch efforts that came late.
