New lights and fresh pavement have improved the Heritage Rail Trail County Park in York, and it's expected to officially open to the public by the end of the month.

It will be just in time for upcoming summer events, such as the Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival.

"Progress is proceeding as we had hoped," said Timothy Miller, acting executive director for Downtown Inc.

Some $1 million in improvements have been made between Lafayette Plaza and Grantley Road. The area between Lafayette Plaza and Kings Mill Road has been repaved. The area between Kings Mill Road and Grantley Road has been upgraded with a porous pavement.

Crews also have installed new LED lighting along the path.

Shiloh Paving & Excavating has been doing the work.

The project is being paid for with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, as well as money from local businesses and organizations, according to Downtown Inc.

Crews are expected to finish the project by the end of the month, Miller said.
