Terror reigns at Field of Screams

It’s the best haunted house in America. Don’t take my word for it, though — it was voted as such by the readers of USA Today.

But Field of Screams in Mountville, Lancaster County, lives up to its name with various attractions, highlighted by Frightmare Asylum. The asylum is a dark, multi-floor house that features numerous characters in straightjackets, scrubs, masks and Hollywood-quality makeup that makes the hair stand up on even the most I-don’t-get-scared people.

The actors, who go through hours of costume and makeup, not to mention the classes they take prior to the season, are committed though and through, with different tactics to complete one goal — make you scream. Grabbing, touching, getting in your face aren’t off limits.

“One thing I like to do is if a boyfriend is behind his girlfriend holding her, I look at him and motion to let me step in. I step in and when she turns around and sees me, she freaks out,” one actor told me of her go-to strategy.

Other attractions include the Den of Darkness, another haunted house that has a classic feel to it with blood, people chained up and actors/props popping out of nowhere; the Haunted Hayride, which takes you through a cornfield with new scary characters and scenes that; a Nocturnal Wasteland, which is “no ordinary walk in the woods,” as FieldOfScreams.com puts it.
