Chambersburg Community Theatre hosts Kickstarter campaign for 'Wizard of Oz'

CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg Community Theatre will open its 62nd season by bringing "The Wizard of Oz" to life like no one in the area has before. CCT will bring animation to the Capitol Theatre stage to create a live-theater, moving-picture experience. The actors will work with an animated backdrop, state-of-the-art faux pyrotechnics and Hollywood-style special effects.

The organization has contracted with an animator based out of Nashville, Tennessee to create custom animation for the opener. It also plans to invest in new special effects courtesy of Theatre Effects; a manufacturer and distributor of theatrical pyrotechnics, Aerotechnics; and special-effects lighting.

"The animation and pyrotechnics are a couple of the big effects that will just really take this production of 'The Wizard of Oz' to the next level," Rachel Kern, Oz director and CCT's Fundraising and Patronage Committee chairman, said.

CCT launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise $5,500 by Oct. 8 to cover the costs of the special effects. Details can be found by going to Kickstarter.com and searching for Chambersburg Community Theatre (or go to http://kck.st/1L2Uq8F).

CCT will not receive any funding from the Kickstarter Campaign if the goal is not reached by the end date.

Those who pledge donations with a credit card will only be charged at the end of the campaign if the goal is reached or surpassed. If the goal is not reached by the end of the campaign, the credit card will not be charged.

"When deciding on how to best fund some of the special effects for 'The Wizard of Oz,' the natural solution for us was to go back to Kickstarter. We are fortunate to have an amazing show and season sponsor whose donation combined with budgeted funds approved by our Board of Directors support a large portion of the production. The Kickstarter Campaign for us is designed to support a specific aspect of the production. The funds generated by this campaign will go towards the special effects," Kern said.

"The Wizard of Oz" will open Friday, Nov. 6 and run through Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Capitol Theatre, 159 S. Main St. Performances are 7 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for students (age 13 through college with ID) and $8 for children (up to age 12).
