‘Gilmore Girls’ fans flock to local Luke’s Diner pop-ups

“Coffee, coffee, coffee!”

That’s what hundreds of local “Gilmore Girls” fans were thinking as they flocked to Luke’s Diner pop-ups in New Cumberland and Harrisburg for a free cup of Luke’s coffee on Wednesday morning.

Brew Crumberland’s Best in New Cumberland and Tomato Pie Café in Harrisburg were two of about 250 cafes across the country participating in Luke’s Coffee Day – a promotional event organized by Netflix in honor of the 16th anniversary of “Gilmore Girls” and the upcoming release of the follow-up series “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”

Dozens of fans – some wearing “Gilmore Girls” attire such as school uniforms and Doose’s Market totes – were lined up outside the door of Brew Crumberland’s Best when the event started at 7 a.m.

While they waited, they took photos with a Luke’s Diner sign hanging on the window out front.

Inside, fans were greeted by a cardboard photo of diner owner Luke Danes, one of the show’s most popular characters. Employees behind the counter mimicked his style, wearing flannel shirts, Luke’s Diner aprons and backwards baseball caps.

A “No Cell Phones” sign hanging on the wall also added to the authentic feel of the pop-up, although the rule was not enforced.

Brew Crumberland's Best's event – which ran until noon – included free coffee served in special Luke’s Diner coffee cups, a Netflix code for three months of the streaming service and a chance to win a “Gilmore Girls” movie night gift basket.

Home-made Pop-Tarts and other pastries were also available for purchase.
