Movies to see this weekend in York and Hanover


Moviegoers have a choice of six new movies coming to York, Hanover and Gettysburg theaters this week, including three based-on-a-true-story, one historical romance, one comedy and one remake:

THE BIG SHORT

Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling star as four unorthodox moneymen who foresaw the consequences of the subprime lending practices of the big banks. The movie is adapted from Michael Lewis' nonfiction book about the 2008 financial crisis. Opens in wide release Wednesday. Rated R. Showing at Queensgate 13 and R/C Hanover.

BROOKLYN

Set in 1950s Ireland and New York, young Ellis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) has to choose between two men and two countries. The screenplay for this romance was written by Nick Hornby. Rated PG-13. Showing only at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg.

CONCUSSION

This suspense is based on the story of forensic neuropathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (played by Will Smith), who makes the link between degenerative brain disease and high-impact sports. Opens Christmas Day. Rated PG-13. Showing at Regal 13, Queensgate 13, R/C Hanover, R/C Gateway 8, Gettysburg 10.

DADDY’S HOME

A mild-mannered radio executive competes for the affection of his stepchildren when their freewheeling father turns up. Starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Opens Dec. 24. Rated PG. Showing at Regal 13, Queensgate 13, R/C Hanover, R/C Gateway 8, Gettysburg 10.

JOY

A dysfunctional family meddles in the burgeoning business of Jennifer Lawrence. This dramedy is based on the true story of Joy Mangano and four generations of her Italian-American family. Mangano invented the Miracle Mop and became a home shopping entrepreneur. Opens Christmas Day. Rated PG-13. Showing at Regal 13, Queensgate 13, R/C Hanover, R/C Gateway 8, Gettysburg 10.

POINT BREAK

Undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) infiltrates a group of extreme athletes suspected of a series of complex crimes. The film is inspired by the 1991 cult hit of the same name in which a gang of bank robbers wore masks of former presidents. Opens Christmas Day. Rated PG-13.
