It was only 8 p.m., but to the hundreds of children at Central Market House in York who couldn’t make it to midnight, it was the start of their New Year.
Close to 2,000 people crowded in the food court area of the market under a net of 850 balloons for an early New Year's Eve countdown and balloon drop. That’s up from about 1,000 last year, organizer Mary Yeaple, of York City Events, said.
Sisters Alex and Bella Wetzel of Windsor Township said the moments before the balloons dropped were very loud and crazy, and they were packed in like sardines, but it was still a lot of fun.
“It’s something they’ll remember,” their mom, Laura Wetzel, said.
Other activities at the third annual children’s event included face painting, glitter tattoos, science demonstrations, a magic show, inflatables and crafts.
The white rose drop countdown and fireworks followed at midnight in Continental Square.
