5 things to do in York, Jan. 15-17

Whether you like live music, art, dancing or family fun, York has an event for you this weekend.

Want to embrace the cold? Make sure you check out York's annual winter ice festival on Saturday.

Or, if you'd rather hide inside, take a look at York's live music and art events below.

FestivIce

A 40-yard ice slide is coming to downtown York Saturday afternoon! What could be cooler than that? This winter festival will also include live ice sculpting, music, food, s'mores and children's activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Market District. More details here.

See a Kable House show

If your New Year's resolution is to hear great live music, you won't want to miss The Ballroom Thieves perform during the Kable House Presents concert series at Central Market Sunday. The band, known for its soaring harmonies, driving rhythms and throbbing cello, made reporter Brett Sholtis' list of the top indie concerts near York to see in 2016. The show starts at 8 p.m. More details here.

Explore York's fine arts scene

Even if you've lived in York your entire life, you might not have realized how big York's art scene really is. York's galleries have plenty to offer in the early months of 2016, and a chilly January weekend might be the perfect time to check it out. Just a few exhibits worth visiting include The Rooted Artist Collective on Newberry Street and The Parliament Arts Organization on E. King St. More details here.

Bluegrass band in concert

The Seldom Scene, one of the area's longest-standing bluegrass groups, is making its way to the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center Saturday night. They'll perform fresh interpretations of old-time tunes and maybe a few songs from their Grammy-nominated album "Scenechronized." More details here.

'Beauty and the Beast' ball

Not into art, concerts or winter festivals? Well, you can't go wrong with dancing. A high school freshman is bringing the magic of "Beauty and the Beast" to a dance just for teens ages 13 to 19 from 7-10 p.m. Saturday at DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre. The theme will encompass everything from the music to a photo booth with props. More details here.
